New PPIC Poll Shows Prop. 82 With Majority Support, 11-Point Lead
Ahead in Fundraising, Public Opinion and Support, Preschool Initiative is Poised for Victory in JuneLOS ANGELES – A new statewide survey out today by the non-partisan Public Policy Institute of California shows Prop. 82 leading among likely voters 52% - 41%, an 11-point margin. The opinion poll is the third since January to show Preschool for All with a majority of support and a comfortable lead, reflecting widespread public backing for the education measure.
“This poll is the latest indication of strong support for Prop. 82,” said Nathan James, spokesman for Yes on 82. “Over the next nine weeks, Californians will learn more about Preschool for All from our broad coalition of teachers, business leaders, and elected officials. And we will have the resources to get our message out to voters – that quality preschool strengthens our education system and helps children succeed in school.”
According to the survey, Prop. 82 continued to display strong support among voting groups that will be key to the June election. The initiative is leading 67%-26% among Democrats and 57% -37% among independents, the fastest growing political registration group in California. Prop. 82 has strong support in the Bay Area and among Latino voters.
The poll also found that voters overwhelmingly believe preschool helps children succeed in school, a key message of Yes on 82: “Regardless of their position on Proposition 82, eight in 10 likely voters think that attending preschool is very (58%) or somewhat important (24%) to a student’s success in kindergarten to 12th grade.” And education continued to be the most important issue for Californians, with 23% of likely voters mentioning it as their top concern.
Fundraising for Prop. 82 remains strong. Last week, the Yes on 82 campaign announced it had raised $2 million in the 10-week period ending March 17 – nearly ten times the amount collected by initiative opponents.
