Yes on 82 Raises $2 Million in First Quarter

Leading in Polls and Contributions, Preschool Initiative is on Track for Victory in June

SACRAMENTO – Yes on 82 released figures from its first pre-election finance filing today showing the campaign raised $2 million for the period ending March 17, 2006 – nearly ten times the amount raised by the opposition campaign. Yes on 82 also posted $1.6 million cash on hand, a key indicator of the financial health of a campaign.

“We are in a very strong position with our fundraising and well-positioned for June,” said campaign spokesman Nathan James. “It is clear from these figures that Proposition 82 is resonating with donors who care about education. Yes on 82 will continue to aggressively raise money so that we can communicate our message that nothing is more important to improving K-12 than passing Preschool for All. Based on this filing, it looks like there are only a few, self-interested donors opposing this education initiative and their campaign won’t have the resources necessary to compete.”

Filing Period 1/1 – 3/17 Total Raised Total Spent Cash on Hand Outstanding Debt
Yes on 82 $2,002,272.76 $468,379.24 $1,697,700.22 $6,968.89
No on 82 $203,363.91 $551,595.57 $81,499.65 $434,465.32

Donations to Yes on 82 came from a mix of business and labor organizations and individuals, reflecting the broad coalition backing Preschool for All. By contrast, contributions to the opposition campaign came primarily from a handful of anti-tax business interests. In addition, opponents finished the period with accrued expenses of nearly half a million dollars.
