New Field Poll Out Today Shows Prop. 82 With Strong, Majority Support 55% of Likely Voters Back Preschool for All
SAN FRANCISCO – A new poll out this morning by the independent, nonpartisan Field Research Corporation shows Prop. 82 is well-positioned to win in June, with a clear majority of likely voters (55%) supporting the initiative. In addition, a majority of independents (53%), Californian’s fastest growing political registration group, back Prop. 82.
“This new poll puts our campaign in a strong position with a 21-point lead and a clear majority of likely voters supporting Prop. 82,” said initiative spokesman Nathan James. “Voters have consistently shown that they are willing to support education at the ballot box – and Prop. 82 is fundamentally about strengthening our schools. As the election gets closer, voters are going hear from the over 400,000 classroom teachers who are supporting Preschool for All. Unlike our opponents, Prop. 82 has broad-based, bipartisan support that is made up of people and groups voters trust on education issues.”
The Field Poll also shows that Democrats (73%) and self-described liberals (74%) support Prop. 82 by nearly a three-to-one margin. These voters will be key turnout targets for the Democratic Gubernatorial campaigns. Once at the polls, they are very likely to support Prop. 82.
The results of the Field Poll also contrast sharply with the internal polling done by opponents of Preschool for All. Released in a late January memo, No on 82 campaign manager Rick Claussen claimed that the horserace was 52% yes, 46% no. Not only was the overall level of support incorrect, but the spread, at 6 points, was massively understated. The new Field Poll shows that opponents will have a difficult time expanding their base.
